ARTIST STATEMENT:

In 2005 I purchased a cell phone with a Global Positioning System. It changed my life. I was no longer perpetually lost. The GPS tracks you anywhere on the planet via satellite. For me this was a new kind of freedom.

I started to explore the concept of mapping and how it works. Mapping inevitably brings one to the concept of time. As soon as one conceptualizes time, it becomes mystery and metaphysics. Questions arise about the nature of our being, our place in the universe, our deep connections to the natural world, the earth and each other.

It turns out we really are star dust. We really do belong in the Grand Scheme of Things. We will return to the stars.

*About Venus Rising: The “hour-glass” graph is reproduced with permission of Guy Ottewell, author of the Astronomical Calendar. The Calendar is published once yearly and distributed by Sky Publishing Corporation, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Besides being beautiful, it is a wealth of information about our universe.
