ARTIST STATEMENT:
For me, everyday life has moments of unexpected visual surprises. These moments pull me away from my inner chatter and produce, however briefly, a non-verbal reaction while I "just look." This is how I approach my art-making: I seek a visceral reaction rather than a descriptive one. To achieve this in my paintings, I create movement and visual surprise. While I call upon all art elements, I emphasize color. As I work, I constantly change a painting as I react to what is already there by adding and subtracting until I know it is finished.
My paintings can teeter on chaos, but never tumble over into the chaotic. One mark, one misused color can change the entire painting. One instant can change everything . . . which makes the work simultaneously terrifying and exhilarating.
